Call for Papers, n. 12: “Paul Ricœur between modernity and postmodernism”

Guest Editors : Alessandro Colleoni and Francesca D’Alessandris

The philosophical itinerary of Paul Ricœur (1913-2005), who can now be considered a classical thinker of the 20th century, crosses modernity and postmodernism in multiple senses. On the one hand, Ricœur’s intellectual journey is rooted in one of the most important modern philosophical traditions in France, i.e. reflective philosophy, that we can trace back to Descartes; on the other, it constantly converses with some of those authors who have diagnosed the decline of modernity – among others, the well-known “masters of suspicion”, Marx, Nietzsche and Freud. Moreover, Ricœur intertwines dialectical opposites associated with modernity and postmodernism respectively: metaphysics and nihilism, identity and difference, foundation and deconstruction. Because of this hybrid character, Ricœur’s hermeneutic phenomenology can be the protagonist of a renewed interest in the current philosophical discussion. Nowadays, indeed, the radicalization of suspicion, which is one of the typical features of postmodernism, is in turn being revoked in favour of perspectives that seek non-naive languages to think about truth, reality, and identity.
